| Wireless Insecurity: Wireless LAN Security Issues and Canadian WLAN Forecast 2002-2006

Wireless LAN (WLAN) connectivity is now a standard feature of many notebook PCs and other computing devices. The first part of this study examines and contrasts the technical features of contending WLAN standards, and shares IDC's forecast of the emerging global WLAN market. The results of an IDC Canada survey on Canadian enterprise WLAN adoption are reported, which are also used as the basis for IDC Canada's first five-year forecast of this emerging wireless segment. Despite the rising adoption of WLAN networks, their use is fraught with security perils. This study discusses two critical security flaws of the most widely used WLAN protocols - which pose real threats to enterprise users, in addition to other conventional vulnerabilities posed by any radio frequency-based communications. We also examine WLAN usage and studies on the incidence of hacker attacks in North America and Great Britain, which reveal that inferior technical security standards are only one reason for the vulnerability of corporate wireless LANs. The mounting attacks on WLAN networks underscore the requirement for complete end-to-end security solutions. This study discusses that need, as well as the urgent requirement for greater awareness of security issues throughout all levels of enterprises using WLANs.
